WhatsApp QR code for business

One scan and the customer is in a chat with you, with the first message already written. Free, no account, and the code is built in your browser from your number.

Getting the number right is most of the job

The code encodes a wa.me link, which is WhatsApp’s own format. It needs your number in full international form, digits only: country code first, no plus sign, no spaces, and no leading zero from the local dialling format.

A Spanish mobile written locally as 600 12 34 56 becomes 34600123456. A UK number written 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123 — the zero disappears, because it only exists for dialling inside the country.

Paste it with spaces or a plus sign if you like; everything that is not a digit is stripped. What cannot be guessed is a missing country code, and that is the most common reason a printed WhatsApp code opens an empty chat.

  1. Take your number the way you would give it to someone abroad.
  2. Drop the plus sign, the spaces and any leading zero.
  3. Put the country code in front.
  4. Paste the result above and scan the preview with your own phone before printing anything.

The prefilled message is the part worth thinking about

A wa.me link can carry a first message, already typed into the box so the customer only has to press send. That removes the worst moment in any chat with a business: an empty field and no idea what to write.

It also answers something a static code cannot do on its own. These codes carry no tracking, so nothing reports back which sign a customer scanned. Give each location its own wording — Hi, I saw the sign at the counter, Hi, I’m at table 4, Hi, I got your card from the van — and WhatsApp tells you itself, inside the message.

That is better information than a scan count, because it arrives attached to a person who is actually asking you something.

A longer message means a denser printed code

The message travels inside the code. A QR code holds more data by adding modules rather than by growing, so at a fixed printed size more text means each module is smaller. Measured with the encoder this tool ships, on a 40 mm printed code:

  1. No message — a 25-character link, a 25×25 grid, 1.21 mm per module.
  2. A short greeting — 34 characters, 29×29, 1.08 mm.
  3. Hi, I would like to book an appointment — 86 characters, 41×41, 0.82 mm.
  4. A two-line message — 157 characters, 53×53, 0.66 mm.

Where a WhatsApp code earns its place

Anywhere a customer has a question and no comfortable way to ask it. A counter card in a shop that is busy at the wrong moments. A window sticker for the hours you are closed, so the enquiry arrives instead of walking away. A card inside the delivery bag. The back of a menu, for the table that will want to order again next week.

Trades work differently: a van decal or a line on the invoice catches the customer at the moment they realise they need you again, which may be months later.

The one place to avoid is anywhere people are moving quickly past. A scan needs a couple of seconds of stillness, and a corridor does not have them.

What this code does not do

The number and the message are stored inside the printed pattern. There is no redirect service in the middle — which is why the code is free with nothing to subscribe to, and equally why the destination cannot be changed after printing. Change your number and the printed codes need reprinting.

There is no scan counter either, and no campaign tracking. The prefilled message is the honest substitute: it tells you what the customer wants, not merely that somebody pointed a camera at a sign.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write my number for a WhatsApp QR code?

Country code first, digits only: no plus sign, no spaces, and no leading zero from the local format. 07700 900123 in the UK becomes 447700900123. Punctuation is stripped automatically, but a missing country code cannot be guessed.

Does the customer need my number saved in their phone?

No. That is what a wa.me link is for — it opens a chat with your business whether or not the number is in their contacts.

Does it work with WhatsApp Business?

Yes. The link addresses a phone number rather than an account type, so the code is identical for a personal account and a WhatsApp Business account.

Can I change the prefilled message later without reprinting?

No. The message is stored inside the printed pattern, so changing it means generating a new code and printing again. If you expect the wording to change, keep it general.

Can I see how many people scanned the code?

No. Nothing here is tracked and there is no redirect service to count with. If you need to know which sign is working, give each one a different prefilled message — the answer arrives in WhatsApp.

What happens if someone does not have WhatsApp?

They land on WhatsApp’s own page for the link rather than in a chat. On a sign aimed at the general public it is worth printing a second way to reach you alongside it.
